The Yellow Buoy
First book in a four-title series with the same protagonist, each taking place during a different season.
In The Yellow Buoy, that takes place in the summer, little Lou, sort for Vasilou, who loves swimming in the sea, is determined to swim to the yellow buoy in the deep but her parents keep preventing her, telling her that despite being a great swimmer she’s not strong yet.
True to her nature, like many children often do, she becomes almost obsessed with the yellow buoy, constantly thinking, dreaming and scheming how to get there. One day she manages to escape her parents’ gaze long enough to attempt it, but soon she’s tired, cold and scared, and she’s not even halfway there! Thankfully her parents saw her go and her dad is already swimming to her rescue.
A wonderful representation of childhood with a lively protagonist presented with tenderness and humour. A story about (knowing your) limits, about impatience, danger and safe haven parents (should) provide to children. With Iris Samartzi’s illustrations truly elevating the story with various delectable details throughout and masterful use of space.
