Mika & Valka
Originally self-published, this gem by two of Greece’s most successful comic book creators, Klimis and Lazaros, is a collection of comic strips reminiscent of Mafalda.
We see life through the eyes of a small refugee boy, Mika, living on the streets, with his dog, Valka, trying to survive and make sense of the world in a big, unwelcoming city. Both heartbreakingly innocent and mature above his years, Mika makes simple observations and interacts with other people on the street. A street artist named Phidias is often his companion, being a reassuring presence in his life.
Despite the grim reality this boy lives in, the comic strips are an ode to the beauty of life, to innocence, and to childhood, while at the same time making readers think and holding up a mirror to society’s face and current state of the world.
